The death of Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo has left the Nigerian entertainment industry shattered — but popular singer KCee is not just grieving. He is asking a question that has stopped many Nigerians in their tracks: why do we always wait until someone is gone before we tell them how much they meant to us?

On Thursday May 14, Nigerian Afrobeats singer Kingsley Okonkwo — widely known as KCee — took to Instagram to share a heartwarming throwback video of himself dancing with the late actor, IK Ogbonna, and others. The video was a window into the bond they shared while Alexx was still alive. But it was the words that accompanied it that truly shook Nigeria.
"We Are All Guilty"
KCee did not hold back. In a message that cut right to the heart of how Nigerians relate to each other, he wrote:
"We are all guilty. We're too good at eulogies… and too late with love. A lot of people have beautiful things to say about you. But they save it for your funeral. They wait until you're gone to post the 'RIP,' the long thread, the 'he was like a brother to me.' Why do we do that?"
It is a question with no comfortable answer. And KCee was not finished. The Limpopo hitmaker went on to urge everyone to do better — not tomorrow, not at the graveside, but right now:
"Let's be human to each other. Let's say the nice things now. Let's show up now. Let's make peace, give grace, and love deeply — while there's still time. Goodbye Alex, sleep well πππ️π."
He specifically called on people to express pride in loved ones, support their businesses, share their work, and check on their mental health while they are still alive to receive it.
Who Was Alexx Ekubo?
Alexx Ekubo was a Nigerian actor and model who rose to prominence as the first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria pageant. He went on to build a remarkable Nollywood career with standout roles in films including Chief Daddy, The Bling Lagosians, and Omo Ghetto: The Saga. He died on Monday May 11 at Evercare Hospital following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer. The news sent shockwaves through the Nigerian entertainment industry and tributes have been pouring in ever since.
Nigerians React — and the Debate Gets Real
The post sparked a flood of reactions across social media, with fans overwhelmingly moved but some pushing back on the narrative:
- @omotolaamos: "Thank you bossman this is very thoughtful and insightful."
- @oluwapinrefumi: "God bless you for this write up sir. Many people ignored the guy, trolled him when he has a failed relationship."
- @minister_danchi_natural_voice: "RIP Uncle Alexx. Uncle KCEE don't put it too hard on yourself sir, you're right with what you said, and trust me it will definitely be okay, and I promise to always check up on those I love, those I don't know, those I can help in challenges of this life and also check up on you too."
- @amaka1427: "Well said Boss. Rest in Power Alex."
- @1eminence: "You people should stop this narrative. People often receive more flowers in death than in life, not because the love is fake, but because death stirs emotions differently."
KCee and the Carter Efe Drama — What You May Have Missed
Beyond his tribute to Alexx Ekubo, KCee has also recently been in the news for a different reason. When skitmaker Carter Efe stirred fresh online drama by openly calling out Afrobeats superstar Wizkid for a boxing match following his victory over Portable, KCee was present at E-Money's house during a cash prize celebration. The Limpopo singer carefully excused himself from the camera to avoid being dragged into the conversation — a move that caught the attention of social media users and earned him praise for his wisdom.
A Message Nigeria Needed to Hear
KCee's tribute is not just about Alexx Ekubo. It is about every person we have been meaning to call, every friend we have been meaning to check on, every loved one whose praises we have been saving for a day that may never come.
Alexx Ekubo is gone. But his memory is already changing how people think about love, time, and the words we leave unsaid. If his passing teaches Nigeria one thing — let it be this: say the nice things now, while there is still time to hear them.
