Nigeria has seen many surprises in its political history. But few moments have turned heads quite like this one. Esther Okereke, one of Nollywood's most recognizable faces, has just been handed a presidential ticket — and she is setting her sights directly on President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

How It Happened
Notable Nollywood actress and film producer Esther Okereke emerged as the presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) ahead of the 2027 general election after defeating former Labour Party presidential aspirant Joseph Faduri and UK-based businessman Ademola Onigbokun at the party's presidential primary held in Abuja.
Her emergence places her among the few women to secure a presidential ticket in Nigeria's democratic history, as parties begin early positioning for the 2027 election cycle.
This is not a symbolic nomination. This is a woman with a ticket, a platform, and a plan.

"A Sacred Assignment"
Okereke did not treat this moment lightly. In her acceptance speech, she said her candidacy represented a "sacred assignment" aimed at rescuing Nigeria from what she described as decades of systemic failure, insecurity, economic hardship, corruption, and failed leadership.
She told delegates: "I accept this nomination not for personal glory but as a sacred assignment. I accept it as a call to service because of my belief that Nigeria shall rise and work again."
She then laid out a damning picture of the country she wants to lead. She pointed to poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and economic hardship as the defining crises of the moment — and positioned the NRM as the movement built to confront them head on.
What She Is Promising NigeriansThis is not a campaign built on vague promises. Okereke pledged to declare emergency action in education and power supply, modernise Nigeria's security architecture, digitise governance, promote affordable healthcare and housing, empower entrepreneurs, and restore patriotism and accountability in public service.
She also called on Nigerians — especially youths and women — to actively participate in the democratic process by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and rejecting politics based on ethnicity and religion.
What the NRM Is BuildingThe party itself has framed this moment as far bigger than one candidate. NRM National Chairman Prince Dr. Chinedu Obi emphasized that the NRM was founded not merely as a political platform seeking power, but as a movement for national transformation rooted in constitutionalism, social justice, accountability, and the rule of law.
The party also unveiled an ambitious national recovery vision tagged "The Dawn of the Nigerian Rescue Mission," backed by a "Rescue Nigeria Blueprint" containing 24 core policy pillars designed to address insecurity, economic decline, unemployment, healthcare deficits, and institutional decay.
The chairman also noted that Okereke was the only aspirant who successfully met all constitutional requirements for the presidential ticket — making her emergence through what he described as a transparent and rigorous screening process.
Why This Matters Beyond PoliticsIn a country where women have long been underrepresented in the highest levels of governance, Esther Okereke's nomination carries a weight that goes beyond party lines. She is an actress, a filmmaker, and now a presidential candidate — proof that the path to Nigeria's presidency is no longer reserved for career politicians alone.
Okereke declared that when the story of Nigeria's rebirth is finally written, history will remember that at a moment of national despair, ordinary citizens chose courage over fear, unity over division, hope over cynicism, and progress over stagnation.
Whether or not she reaches Aso Rock in 2027, that statement alone is already part of Nigeria's story.
