Singer Portable Arrested Again — This Time for Slander Against Fuji Legend Saheed Osupa

Controversial Nigerian street hop artist Habeeb Okikiola — better known as Portable — has found himself in legal trouble once again. The singer was arrested on Sunday April 13 by the Kwara State Police Command following a formal petition filed by Fuji music veteran Saheed Osupa. The arrest, which was carried out in Abeokuta Ogun State, has set social media ablaze and reignited the debate about Portable's repeated run-ins with the law and his conduct on social media platforms.

How the Arrest Happened

According to police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi the arrest was not made arbitrarily. The Kwara State Police Command secured a valid arrest warrant from a Magistrate Court in Ilorin before moving in on the singer — a procedural step that underlined the seriousness with which the authorities were treating the allegations made against him.
She stated:

"In view of the weight of these allegations and the supporting evidence presented, the command secured a valid arrest warrant."

Portable was subsequently picked up in Abeokuta and transported to Ilorin for further questioning. As of the time of this report he remained in police custody with preparations underway for his formal arraignment in court.

What Are the Allegations Against Portable?

The petition filed by Saheed Osupa — born Okunola Saheed — against Portable contained a serious and wide ranging list of allegations that go well beyond a simple celebrity disagreement. According to the petition Portable stands accused of criminal defamation, incitement, threats to life, character assassination, and breach of public peace.

The charges stem from a series of offensive and inflammatory statements that Portable allegedly made against Osupa across social media and other public platforms. The nature and severity of the allegations suggest that Osupa and his team had been documenting Portable's conduct over a period of time before deciding to take the matter to the authorities.

For a music veteran of Saheed Osupa's stature and reputation to pursue formal legal action against a younger artist is itself significant — it speaks to the seriousness with which he viewed the attacks and the impact they were having on his name and professional standing.

Portable Speaks From Custody — Pleads for Help on Instagram

In a move that surprised few who follow Portable closely the singer wasted no time taking to social media even from custody. He posted on his Instagram Story shortly after his arrest reaching out directly to fans and the public and appealing for intervention on his behalf.

He wrote:

"Make una help me beg Osupa. I don't have any issue with police. Na him say make dem come carry me."

Portable appeals to Osupa over police issue

The message was typical Portable — unfiltered, direct, and impossible to ignore. But for many observers the appeal also revealed a side of the singer that his loud public persona often obscures — a man who, when the consequences of his words become real and unavoidable, turns to the same public he has often polarised for support.

Whether the appeal would move Osupa or his management to reconsider their legal action remained to be seen at the time of the arrest.

This Is Not Portable's First Time in Legal Trouble

For anyone who has followed Portable's career this arrest will come as little surprise. The singer has developed a pattern of behaviour that has brought him into conflict with law enforcement on multiple occasions — a pattern that has increasingly threatened to overshadow the genuine musical talent that first brought him to national attention.

His frequent brushes with the law, combined with a social media presence that is often provocative and sometimes legally problematic, have made him one of the most controversial figures in Nigerian music. Each new incident adds another chapter to a story that fans and critics have been following with a mixture of concern, frustration, and in some cases reluctant fascination.

The fact that this latest arrest involves Saheed Osupa — a legend whose contributions to Fuji music span decades and whose reputation in Nigerian music is virtually unassailable — makes the situation particularly significant. It is one thing for Portable to clash with his peers. It is another thing entirely to find yourself in a legal battle with a figure of Osupa's standing.

The Bigger Issue — Freedom of Expression vs Responsible Conduct

Portable's latest arrest raises a question that goes beyond this specific incident and touches on something much broader — where exactly is the line between freedom of expression and responsible public conduct in the age of social media?

Nigeria's Cybercrimes Act and existing defamation laws make clear that what a person says online carries real legal weight. The reach and speed of social media means that damaging statements can spread to millions of people within minutes — causing harm to reputations and livelihoods that can be difficult or impossible to fully repair.

For public figures like Portable who have built massive platforms on the back of their unfiltered and often explosive personalities the temptation to say whatever comes to mind without considering the consequences is clearly very real. But as this arrest demonstrates once again the law does not make exceptions for social media influencers or popular musicians — no matter how many followers they have.

What Happens Next

With Portable in custody in Ilorin and arraignment proceedings being prepared the next few days will be critical in determining how this situation unfolds. Whether Saheed Osupa's team decides to pursue the matter fully through the courts or whether a settlement can be reached behind the scenes remains to be seen.

What is clear is that Portable faces a genuinely serious legal situation — one that will require more than a social media appeal or a public apology to resolve. For the singer's sake and for the sake of the music career he has worked hard to build, many are hoping this moment will finally prompt a real and lasting change in how he conducts himself in public.
